Whiplash injury and Physiotherapy:

The most common type of injury in a car/vehicle accident is the whiplash injury. A whiplash injury is a neck injury that is caused by a sudden jerk to the neck. This injury is usually caused when your car is rear-ended by another vehicle. The collision›s sudden force causes the patient›s neck to shake and jerk vigorously, causing excessive strain on the neck and upper shoulder muscles. In addition to pain in the neck and shoulders, it can cause dizziness, fatigue, and headache.

Treatment of whiplash injuries is with over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling and inflammation and exercise. Physiotherapy sessions have proven to be the most effective in treating whiplash injuries. Your therapist will start treating you using multiple techniques involving heat therapy, light massage, exercising of the affected muscles including shoulders and if required, focus on other adjoining areas like the spine, disks between the bones, ligaments, muscles, nerves and other tissues of the neck.
