Manual Therapy for Whiplash After a Car Accident
How Physical Therapy Can Help Neck Pain and Restore Movement The accident may happen in seconds. But neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and difficulty moving can continue long afterward. Whiplash-associated disorders commonly occur following rapid acceleration-deceleration forces, such as those experienced during a motor vehicle collision. At Unique Care, we have worked with many patients recovering after car accidents, and one of the most important principles we emphasize is: whiplash rehabilitation is about more than treating where it hurts
What Happens During Whiplash?
During a collision, rapid forces can place stress on the muscles, joints, ligaments, and other structures around the neck.
• Neck pain
• Neck stiffness
• Reduced range of motion
• Headaches
• Shoulder or upper-back pain
• Muscle tenderness
• Difficulty with everyday activities
Why Is Movement Important After Whiplash?
Patients experiencing pain after an accident may naturally become hesitant to move their neck. However, modern whiplash management generally encourages appropriate activity and exercise rather than prolonged immobilization in uncomplicated cases.Clinical guidelines support multimodal management that may include education, exercise, and manual treatment depending on the patient's presentation
What Role Does Manual Therapy Play?
Manual therapy refers to hands-on techniques performed by a trained clinician. Depending on the patient, this may include joint mobilization, soft-tissue techniques, manual stretching, movement-assisted techniques, and other hands-on interventions. Cervical manipulation may also be considered for certain appropriately screened patients, but it is not appropriate for everyone. At Unique Care, manipulation is a clinical decision - not an automatic treatment simply because someone has neck pain.
Do Not Just Treat the Pain. Restore the Function.
After a car accident, the goal should not simply be to make your neck feel better for a few hours. We want you to regain your ability to turn your head, drive, work, sleep, exercise, and return to normalactivities with confidence. At Unique Care, our physical therapists combine hands-on manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, movement retraining, education, and other evidence-informed techniques based on each patient's individual presentation.
